When Jesus asks His disciples who they believe He is, Peter answers with faith. Today’s readings invite us to trust Christ more deeply, rest in God’s wisdom, and build our daily lives on the firm foundation of the One who never abandons His people.
We all face moments when we wonder what is truly dependable. Plans change, people disappoint us, and our own understanding can fall short. Scripture points us toward a firmer foundation: God’s wisdom, God’s faithfulness, and Jesus Christ Himself.
The Word
Readings from USCCB: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/082326.cfm
In Isaiah 22:19–23, authority is entrusted to Eliakim, who receives the key of the house of David. The image of a key points to responsibility, stewardship, and authority that is meant to serve God’s people.
Psalm 138 responds with gratitude and trust. The psalmist praises God for hearing prayer, giving strength, caring for the lowly, and remaining faithful to the work of His hands.
In Romans 11:33–36, Paul stands in awe before the wisdom and knowledge of God. His words remind us that God’s ways are greater than our understanding and that everything ultimately comes from Him, exists through Him, and belongs to Him.
The Gospel, Matthew 16:13–20, brings the readings into focus. Jesus asks His disciples who they say He is. Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus then speaks of Peter, the Church, and the keys of the kingdom.
Reflection
Jesus’ question to the disciples is also a question for every believer: Who is Jesus to me?
Peter’s answer is more than correct information. It is a confession of faith. He recognizes that Jesus is not simply a teacher, prophet, or inspiring figure. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. That truth becomes the foundation for everything that follows.
Our faith grows stronger when Christ becomes the foundation of our choices, relationships, fears, hopes, and plans. We may not understand every circumstance we face. Romans reminds us that God’s wisdom reaches beyond what we can see. Psalm 138 assures us that God hears, strengthens, and remains faithful.
We do not need to have every answer before we trust Him. We can place what we do not understand into His hands and keep building our lives on Christ, one faithful decision at a time.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me know You more deeply and trust You more completely.
Give me faith to build my life on You and humility to trust Your wisdom when I cannot see the way ahead.
Strengthen me to live what I believe with courage, love, and faithfulness. Amen.
