Jesus sees Nathanael before Nathanael fully understands who Jesus is. Today’s readings invite us to trust that Christ knows us deeply, calls us personally, and sends us to make His Kingdom known through lives of sincere faith, hope, and witness.
Faith often begins with a simple invitation: come and see. On the Feast of Saint Bartholomew, the readings remind us that Jesus meets us personally, knows us completely, and calls us into a life that points others toward His Kingdom.

In Revelation 21:9b–14, John is shown the holy city, Jerusalem, radiant with the glory of God. Its foundations bear the names of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb, reminding us that God builds His people on faithful witness and the mission entrusted to those who follow Christ.
Psalm 145 praises the Lord’s enduring Kingdom and celebrates those who make His glory known.
In John 1:45–51, Philip tells Nathanael that he has found the One promised in Scripture. Nathanael is skeptical, but Philip does not argue. He simply invites him to “come and see.” When Nathanael meets Jesus, he discovers that Jesus already knows him. His doubt gives way to faith, and Jesus promises that he will see even greater things.
Reflection
It is deeply comforting to know that Jesus sees us before we ever come looking for Him. Nathanael approaches with questions, yet Christ receives him with knowledge, patience, and truth. We do not need to hide our uncertainty from the Lord. We can bring Him our questions, our hesitation, and our imperfect faith.
Philip also gives us a simple model for sharing faith. He does not pressure Nathanael or try to win an argument. He offers an invitation. Sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is gently help someone take one step closer to Jesus through our kindness, our example, our prayers, or a simple word of encouragement.
Like the Apostles whose names appear on the foundations of the holy city, each disciple is called to bear witness. We may never know how God will use a quiet act of faithfulness, but every sincere response to Christ can become part of something larger than ourselves. The Lord knows us, calls us, and gives us grace to help make His Kingdom visible.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for knowing me completely and calling me to follow You.
Give me a sincere heart and the courage to help others draw closer to You through love and faithful witness.
May my life make Your goodness known. Amen.
