Clear Eyes and Humble Hearts Before the Lord’s Mercy Today

Morning light shining through a quiet doorway, symbolizing humility and mercy.

Liturgical Day: Monday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: 2 Kings 17:5-8,13-15a,18; Psalm 60:3-5,12-13; Matthew 7:1-5
Source: USCCB Daily Readings

Today’s readings call us back to honest repentance and humble mercy. Israel’s fall warns us against ignoring God’s voice, while Jesus teaches us to examine our own hearts before correcting another. Grace begins where pride gives way to truth.

It is easy to see what is broken around us, but harder to let God show us what needs healing within us. Today’s readings invite us to listen, return, and look with humility.

The Word

In 2 Kings, Israel’s exile is shown as the sorrowful fruit of refusing God’s covenant and ignoring His repeated warnings through the prophets. The psalm cries out for God’s help and restoration. In the Gospel, Jesus warns against harsh judgment and calls us to remove the “beam” from our own eye first.

Reflection

God’s warnings are never meant to destroy us. They are invitations to come home. Israel’s story reminds us that a heart can grow stubborn when it stops listening. Little compromises, ignored convictions, and repeated excuses can slowly lead us away from the Lord.

Jesus brings that warning close to home. Before we measure someone else’s faults, He asks us to stand honestly before God. This does not mean we ignore sin or stop helping one another. It means love must begin with humility.

When we let God correct us first, our vision becomes clearer. We become less eager to condemn and more ready to restore. Mercy grows in the heart that knows it also needs mercy.

Call to Action

Before correcting or criticizing someone today, pause and ask God to show you one area of your own heart that needs His grace.

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to what needs healing in me.
Soften my heart where I have resisted Your voice.
Help me to speak with humility, love with mercy,
and walk today in Your truth. Amen.
