Some of God’s most beautiful work begins quietly. A conversation by a river. A heart made ready to listen. A word of truth received with faith. Today’s readings remind us that the Lord is never absent in these small moments. He is drawing near, opening hearts, and forming a people who will remain faithful in Him.
The Word
In the first reading, Paul and his companions arrive in Philippi and meet Lydia, a worshiper of God. As she listens, the Lord opens her heart to what Paul is saying. She and her household are baptized, and her response is immediate, generous, and full of faith. In the psalm, God’s people rejoice because the Lord takes delight in them. In the Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that the Advocate, the Spirit of truth, will testify to Him, and that they also will testify. He prepares them for hardship so they will not fall away.
Reflection
Lydia’s story is simple, but it carries deep hope. The Lord opened her heart. That is where faith begins for every one of us. We can share truth, extend an invitation, and live faithfully, but it is God who opens the inner life and makes room for His word to take root.
That should make us both humble and hopeful. Humble, because no one is argued into life with God by force or pressure. Hopeful, because no heart is beyond the reach of His grace. The Lord still knows how to prepare a person for the right word at the right time.
The psalm adds another layer of comfort: the Lord takes delight in His people. Many believers carry quiet burdens, hidden weariness, or a sense of not being enough. This reminder matters. God does not tolerate His people from a distance. He delights in them. He loves them. He sees the lowly and adorns them with victory.
Then Jesus speaks honestly about difficulty. He does not hide the cost of discipleship from His followers. He tells them that opposition will come. Yet His purpose is not to frighten them but to steady them. The Spirit of truth will testify, and they will not stand alone. The same is true for us. Faithfulness may require courage, but it is never courage we produce by ourselves. The Holy Spirit strengthens the heart that God has opened.
So today we are invited to be available to God. Let Him open your heart again. Let Him deepen what He has already begun. Let Him make you gentle, steady, and unafraid. A heart opened by God becomes a place where truth is welcomed, courage grows, and grace is shared with others.

Set aside a few quiet minutes today to listen for the Lord, and ask Him to open your heart more fully to His voice.

Lord, open my heart to Your word. Make me ready to listen, quick to obey, and steady in faith. Fill me with the Spirit of truth, and give me quiet courage to follow You with love, humility, and peace. Amen.
