There are seasons when faith feels bright and easy, and there are seasons when it asks for quiet courage. Today’s readings invite us into both joy and steadiness. The Lord gives His Spirit, strengthens His people, and teaches us how to live with hope that is both faithful and gentle.
The Word
In Acts, Philip proclaims Christ in Samaria, and the city is filled with joy. Peter and John then come and pray for the believers, and they receive the Holy Spirit. In the psalm, all the earth is called to cry out to God with joy and remember His mighty works. In 1 Peter, believers are urged to be ready to explain the reason for their hope with gentleness and reverence. In the Gospel, Jesus promises another Advocate, the Spirit of truth, and assures His disciples that He will not leave them orphaned.
Reflection
One beautiful thread runs through all of today’s readings: God does not draw near to us only to comfort us. He also strengthens us to live as His people in the world. In Samaria, the Gospel brings joy. In the letter of Peter, hope becomes a witness. In the Gospel, Jesus promises the Spirit who remains with us always.
This matters for ordinary life. Christian hope is not meant to stay hidden in the heart as a private feeling. It is meant to shape the way we speak, respond, endure, and love. Peter does not tell believers to argue harshly or defend themselves with pride. He says to speak with gentleness and reverence. That kind of witness carries the fragrance of Christ.
Jesus also connects love with obedience. His commandments are not burdens meant to press us down. They are the path of life with Him. When we keep His word, we are not trying to earn His love. We are responding to the One who has already come near, already chosen us, and already promised not to leave us alone.
Some days, the most faithful thing we can do is simply remember this: we are not abandoned. The Spirit of truth is still at work. Christ is still present. The Father still loves His children. Because of that, we can live with a calm heart, a clear conscience, and a hopeful voice.
