Receive the Word With a Humble and Trusting Heart

God invites us to receive His word with openness, humility, and trust. As Ezekiel takes in the scroll and Jesus points to the simplicity of a child, we are reminded that faith grows when we listen closely, depend on God, and care for those who may feel forgotten.

Faith is not only about hearing God’s word. It is about allowing that word to enter our hearts, shape our choices, and lead us toward greater humility, trust, and love.

In Ezekiel 2:8–3:4, the prophet is told to receive the scroll God gives him and then speak God’s words to Israel. What first carries words of sorrow becomes sweet as honey when Ezekiel receives it in obedience. Psalm 119 echoes this delight in God’s instruction, describing God’s promises as precious and sweet.

In Matthew 18:1–5, 10, 12–14, Jesus teaches His disciples that greatness in the Kingdom is found in becoming humble like a child. He also reveals the Father’s tender concern for each person through the image of a shepherd searching for one sheep that has wandered away.

Reflection

God’s word can challenge us before it comforts us. Ezekiel was not given an easy message, yet he received what God placed before him. His example invites us to approach Scripture with a willing heart—not only looking for words that reassure us, but also allowing God to correct, guide, and transform us.

Jesus then turns our attention toward humility. A child does not enter the Kingdom through status, achievement, or self-importance. Jesus calls His followers toward a trusting dependence on God and a willingness to welcome those who seem small or easily overlooked.

And when someone wanders, God does not respond with indifference. The shepherd searches. The Father desires that none of His little ones be lost. That gives us hope when we feel distant from God, and it also gives us a responsibility: to notice, welcome, and care for those who may be struggling.

Today, receive God’s word with an open heart. Let it become something you live, not simply something you hear.

Lord, open my heart to receive Your word with humility and trust. Give me grace to follow Your guidance and to care for those who feel lost or forgotten. Help me walk closely with You today. Amen.
