The things of this world do not last, but God’s Kingdom endures. Today’s readings invite us to loosen our grip on temporary comforts, trust God more deeply, and find lasting hope in Christ—even when life brings hunger, sorrow, rejection, or uncertainty.
It is easy to build our sense of security around what we can see, own, accomplish, or control. Scripture calls us to something deeper: a heart anchored in God, free enough to receive His Kingdom as our true treasure.
The Word
In 1 Corinthians 7:25–31, Saint Paul reminds believers that this world’s present form is passing away. His message is not that ordinary responsibilities are unimportant, but that they must never become our ultimate foundation.
Psalm 45 calls the listener to turn attentively toward the Lord, while in Luke 6:20–26, Jesus blesses the poor, the hungry, the sorrowful, and those rejected because of Him. He also warns against becoming so satisfied with present comfort that we forget our need for God.
Together, the readings point us beyond temporary circumstances to God’s lasting promises.
Reflection
Jesus turns many of the world’s assumptions upside down. We often think blessing means having enough, feeling comfortable, being admired, and avoiding hardship. Yet Jesus speaks hope to people who seem to have very little. Their present suffering does not mean God has forgotten them. His Kingdom belongs to those who place their hope in Him.
Saint Paul gives us a similar invitation. Everything we hold in this life is temporary. Possessions, achievements, disappointments, and even seasons of joy will eventually pass. That truth does not make life meaningless. Instead, it helps us put everything in its proper place. We can receive good things with gratitude without making them our god, and we can endure difficult seasons knowing they do not have the final word.
Today, consider what has been weighing too heavily on your heart. Perhaps it is success, security, approval, money, comfort, or control. Christ invites us to hold these things lightly and cling more firmly to Him. Our deepest security is not found in a changing world but in the unchanging faithfulness of God.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me hold the things of this world with open hands and place my deepest trust in You. Give me grace to seek Your Kingdom first and to remain faithful in both comfort and hardship. Keep my heart attentive to those who are poor, hungry, sorrowful, or forgotten. Amen.
