God Reveals Himself: The Deposit of Faith

Rays of golden light shine on an open Bible with a glowing cross in the background, symbolizing divine revelation.

From the very beginning, God has chosen to make Himself known to humanity—not as a distant force, but as a loving Father who desires a relationship with His children. Revelation is not simply the transfer of divine information; it is the unfolding of God’s heart, His loving plan to draw us into communion with Him.

“It pleased God, in his goodness and wisdom, to reveal himself and to make known the mystery of his will. His will was that men should have access to the Father, through Christ, the Word made flesh, in the Holy Spirit, and thus become sharers in the divine nature.”
Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 51)

The Story of Divine Revelation

God’s Revelation unfolds in stages throughout salvation history. It begins with creation itself—where His invisible nature is reflected in the beauty, order, and goodness of the world. He speaks through the patriarchs and prophets, gradually revealing His will and His promises. This Revelation reaches its fullness in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. In Christ, God does not just speak to humanity; He becomes one of us. He is the final and complete Word of the Father.

“Christ, the Son of God made man, is the Father’s one, perfect and unsurpassable Word. In him he has said everything; there will be no other word than this one.”
CCC 65

“Through all the words of Sacred Scripture, God speaks only one single Word, his one Utterance in whom he expresses himself completely.”
CCC 102

The Deposit of Faith

The fullness of God’s Revelation is entrusted to the Church in what we call the Deposit of Faith. This sacred deposit contains Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition—the written Word of God and the living transmission of faith handed down through the apostles and their successors. Together, they form one sacred trust from which the Church draws all that she proposes for belief.

“The apostles entrusted the ‘Sacred deposit’ of the faith (the depositum fidei), contained in Sacred Scripture and Tradition, to the whole of the Church.”
CCC 84

  • Sacred Scripture: The inspired Word of God, written under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. “God is the author of Sacred Scripture because he inspired its human authors.”
    CCC 105
  • Sacred Tradition: The lived faith of the Church—the teachings, worship, and life that have carried the Gospel through every generation. “Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture, then, are bound closely together and communicate one with the other.”
    CCC 80
  • The Magisterium: The teaching office of the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, which authentically interprets both Scripture and Tradition. “The task of interpreting the Word of God authentically has been entrusted solely to the Magisterium of the Church.”
    CCC 85

These three—Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium—are inseparable. They work together like three strands of a single cord, ensuring that the faith we receive is the same faith proclaimed by the apostles.

“It is clear therefore that, in the supremely wise arrangement of God, Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church are so connected and associated that one of them cannot stand without the others.”

CCC 95

Revelation and Relationship

Revelation is ultimately about relationship. God reveals Himself so that we might know Him, love Him, and serve Him. Through faith, we respond to His invitation—not out of obligation, but out of love and trust. The Deposit of Faith is not a relic of the past; it is a living reality that continues to nourish the Church and guide each believer into deeper communion with Christ.

“By faith, man completely submits his intellect and his will to God. With his whole being man gives his assent to God the revealer.”

CCC 143

When we open the Scriptures, participate in the sacraments, and listen to the teaching of the Church, we encounter the living God who still speaks today. His truth is not distant—it is alive, transformative, and personal.

Faith in Action

Reflect today on how God has revealed Himself in your own life. In moments of silence, prayer, or even struggle, He continues to make Himself known. The more we open our hearts to His Word, the more we discover the fullness of life He offers through the faith handed down to us.

“The Spirit of the Lord fills the world, is all-embracing, and knows what man says.”
Wisdom 1:7
