Guided by the Spirit of Wisdom and Faith — Memorial of Saint Leo the Great

A saintly figure bathed in golden light, holding an open book and gazing upward toward a radiant star symbolizing divine wisdom and faith.

Today we celebrate Saint Leo the Great, a pope whose wisdom, courage, and love for truth guided the Church through turbulent times. Known as a Doctor of the Church, Saint Leo’s writings and leadership defended the faith and deepened our understanding of Christ’s divinity and humanity. His life reminds us that true greatness is found in service, truth, and humility before God.

The readings today speak powerfully about wisdom, justice, and faith — three virtues that Saint Leo embodied.

In the Book of Wisdom (1:1–7), we are reminded that wisdom only dwells in a pure and sincere heart. God reveals Himself to those who seek Him with integrity, not deceit. “For wisdom is a kindly spirit,” we hear, but it “enters not into a soul that plots evil.” In our world, filled with conflicting voices and distractions, this passage calls us to cultivate a heart open to divine wisdom — one that rejects corruption and seeks the good.

The Psalm (139) beautifully echoes this truth, acknowledging that God knows us completely — our thoughts, our actions, and our intentions. There is nowhere we can go to escape His presence. The psalmist’s words, “Even there your hand shall guide me, and your right hand hold me fast,” reassure us that God’s Spirit fills the world and lovingly directs those who seek His way.

In the Gospel of Luke (17:1–6), Jesus teaches about forgiveness and faith. He warns against causing others to stumble and instructs us to forgive — not once or twice, but even “seven times in one day.” The disciples, feeling the weight of this command, plead, “Increase our faith!” Jesus responds that faith, even as small as a mustard seed, holds the power to move mountains — or, as He says, to uproot a mulberry tree.

Saint Leo lived this kind of faith. In his time, heresies threatened to divide the Church, yet through prayer, teaching, and pastoral care, he stood firm in truth. His faith — though tested — was unwavering, rooted in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit.

Faith in Action

Today’s readings invite us to reflect on three questions:

  1. Am I seeking God with integrity of heart, or allowing worldly distractions to cloud my wisdom?
  2. Do I forgive as freely as Christ commands, trusting that mercy transforms hearts?
  3. Do I nurture my “mustard seed” of faith, believing that even small acts of trust can move the impossible?

As Saint Leo the Great once said:

“What was visible in our Savior has passed over into his mysteries.”
Christ now lives and works through us — the Church — when we choose wisdom over folly, forgiveness over resentment, and faith over fear.

Closing Prayer

Lord God,
You filled Saint Leo the Great with wisdom and strength
to defend the truth of the Gospel and guide Your people in faith.
Grant us a heart of integrity,
a spirit of forgiveness,
and faith strong enough to trust You in all things.
May we walk in Your everlasting way,
led always by Your Spirit of wisdom and peace.
Amen.
