Rooted in Christ’s Love, Strengthened to Follow Him Daily

A glowing clay oil lamp rests beside olive tree roots as golden dawn light spreads across a quiet grove.

Following Jesus can bring difficult choices, especially when faith challenges familiar habits or expectations. Today’s readings invite us to draw strength from Christ’s love, trust God’s goodness, and remain faithful with hearts that are courageous enough to follow and gentle enough to love.

Daily Reflection by John Scigliano for October 22, 2026

Sometimes the hardest part of living our faith is carrying it into an uncomfortable conversation or a decision others may not support. We want to follow Jesus, but we also want everyone to be pleased with us. Where do we find strength when those desires pull in different directions?

The Word

In Ephesians 3:14–21, Paul prays that believers will receive inner strength through the Holy Spirit and that Christ will dwell in their hearts through faith. His prayer centers on becoming deeply rooted in a love we can’t fully comprehend.

Psalm 33:1–2, 4–5, 11–12, 18–19 celebrates God’s goodness, trustworthy works, and enduring purposes.

In Luke 12:49–53, Jesus speaks of fire, his approaching suffering, and divisions that can arise even within families because of him. His words confront us with the serious demands of discipleship.

Reflection

Paul’s prayer gives us a place to begin when faith feels difficult: with God. Before we prepare an explanation, defend a decision, or worry about someone’s response, we can ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen us within. A few quiet moments of prayer can help us recognize the fear, pride, or desire for approval that influences our next step.

Jesus’ words about division are unsettling, especially when we long for harmony at home. Following him can shift our priorities, and others may misunderstand the change. Choosing honesty, stepping away from a harmful habit, or making room for worship may disrupt familiar expectations. We can acknowledge that cost without treating another person as an enemy.

Being rooted in Christ’s love shapes how we remain faithful. We can speak clearly while listening patiently. We can hold a conviction without humiliating someone who disagrees. When a conversation becomes tense, we can pause instead of insisting on the last word. Courage and gentleness can grow together as we allow Jesus to shape our responses.

Let Christ’s love strengthen both your commitment and your conduct. You do not have to resolve every disagreement today. Bring one difficult situation to prayer, ask for the grace to respond faithfully, and entrust the other person to God. Even when understanding takes time, you can keep choosing love.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, strengthen me through your Holy Spirit and deepen my faith in Christ’s love. Give me courage to follow Jesus when the way is difficult and gentleness toward those who do not understand. Guide my words and actions, so they reflect your goodness. Amen.

Call to Action

Before one difficult conversation or decision today, pause and pray: “Jesus, help me remain faithful and respond with love.”
