Daily Reflection by John Scigliano for October 21, 2026

A message needs an answer. Someone needs a meal. A responsibility waits for our attention. These ordinary moments may seem far removed from our spiritual lives, yet they often become the very places where we respond to God’s grace. Faithfulness begins with the love we bring to what is before us.

The Word

Read Today’s Scripture Readings on the USCCB Website

In Ephesians 3:2–12, Paul describes his ministry as a stewardship of grace given for others’ benefit. He announces that Gentiles share in Christ’s promise and belong to the same Body through the Gospel.

The responsorial passage, Isaiah 12:2–3, 4bcd, 5–6, celebrates God’s saving presence with trust, thanksgiving, and the joyful image of drawing water.

In Luke 12:39–48, Jesus calls His disciples to readiness. His example of a steward responsible for feeding others connects watchfulness with faithful service. He also warns against abusing authority and neglecting known responsibilities: greater gifts bring greater accountability.

Reflection

It is easy to imagine that serving God requires a greater opportunity than we have. We may wait for more time, stronger confidence, or a clearer sense of direction. Yet the next faithful step may already be within reach: listen carefully, keep a promise, or finish a task someone else depends on.

Consider the people your daily choices affect. A family member may need your undivided attention. A coworker may benefit from your patience or experience. Someone who feels overlooked may need a welcome. We cannot meet every need, but we can give thoughtful attention to the people and responsibilities entrusted to us.

Some days, we recognize that we have neglected something important. We can bring that honestly to Jesus. His mercy gives us the courage to acknowledge our failure, make amends where possible, and start again. A brief prayer before a difficult conversation or an overdue task can help us take that first step.

Use what God has placed in your hands to care for someone today. You do not need to solve everything before you begin. Ask for the grace to notice one opportunity, then respond with the time, ability, or kindness you can offer.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the grace and responsibilities You have entrusted to me. Open my eyes to the person who needs my care today. Forgive my neglect, and help me respond with humility, attention, and love. Amen.
