Paul describes a peace that brings those who were far off into God’s household. Jesus calls his disciples to remain ready and attentive. Together, these readings invite us to live with open hearts: welcomed by Christ, and prepared to welcome others.
Faithful waiting is more than watching for what comes next. It means living today with the peace of Christ and making room for others in the household of God.
The Word
Today’s USCCB Readings — October 20, 2026
In Ephesians 2:12–22, Paul describes how Christ reconciles people to God and breaks down the divisions that once separated them. Strangers become members of God’s household, joined together in Christ. Psalm 85 celebrates the peace and justice God brings. In Luke 12:35–38, Jesus calls his disciples to keep their lamps lit and be ready to welcome their master.
Reflection
Jesus’ image of servants waiting with lamps lit can sound like a call to watch the clock. But the reading points toward a way of life: staying attentive to God and ready to respond with faith.
Paul gives that readiness a shape. Christ brings peace across divisions and makes strangers members of one household. When we remember that we, too, have been welcomed by grace, we can meet others with patience and kindness.
That welcome can begin in ordinary moments: listening without rushing, reaching out to someone who feels left out, or choosing peace when a disagreement tempts us to pull away. These small acts help make God’s household visible in our daily lives.
We do not wait alone or from a distance. Christ has drawn us near and calls us to keep our hearts open. Today, let readiness mean being prepared to receive God’s grace and share it with someone else.
Prayer
God of peace, thank you for drawing us near and welcoming us into your household. Keep our hearts attentive to you, and help us welcome others with patience and love. Amen.
