Living Richly Through God’s Grace and Generosity Each Day

An open hand holds grain beside a basket in a sunlit field, with a path and cross at dawn.

Saint Paul points us toward the grace that gives us new life, while Jesus warns that possessions cannot define our worth. Together, the readings invite us to receive God’s gifts with gratitude and use what we have in ways that matter to him.

Daily Reflection by John Scigliano for October 19, 2026

On this memorial of Saints John de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues and their companions, we hear a call to live from God’s grace. Their witness and today’s readings turn our attention from what we can store up to the life and love we can share.

The Word

Read the USCCB readings for October 19, 2026.

In Ephesians 2:1–10, Saint Paul teaches that salvation is God’s gift of grace and that we are created in Christ for good works. Psalm 100 calls us to serve with gladness and give thanks. In Luke 12:13–21, Jesus warns against greed and tells of a rich man whose plans center on storing his abundance for himself.

Reflection

Saint Paul reminds us that our life with Christ begins with God’s mercy. We do not earn grace by having more, achieving more, or proving our worth. God gives us new life, and that gift can shape how we see everything we have.

Jesus’ parable asks us to consider where we place our security. The rich man plans for the future, but his plans leave no room for gratitude, generosity, or dependence on God. His harvest is abundant, yet he measures his life only by what he can keep.

Faith invites us to receive our daily blessings with open hands. Our time, skills, resources, and attention can become ways to serve others. Good works do not purchase God’s love; they respond to the love already given.

Today, pause before one ordinary choice about your time or possessions. Ask whether it can become an opportunity to thank God or care for someone. A life rich in what matters to God grows through small acts of faithful generosity.

Prayer

Merciful God, thank you for the grace that gives us life in Christ. Help us receive your gifts with gratitude and share them with generous hearts. Amen.
