Christ Ascends in Glory and Remains Close to His People

Disciples on a mountaintop at sunrise reflecting on the Ascension of Jesus in hope and prayer.

The Ascension of the Lord is a moment of both wonder and promise. The disciples watch Jesus ascend into heaven, yet they are not abandoned. Instead, they are filled with hope and sent forward with purpose. Today’s readings remind us that Christ reigns in glory while still guiding His people with love and presence.

The Word

In the readings for the Ascension, Jesus commissions His disciples before returning to the Father. The Apostles are called to become witnesses to the ends of the earth, trusting in God’s power and guidance. The psalm proclaims the kingship of the Lord with joyful praise as Christ is lifted in glory.

The alternate readings for the Seventh Sunday of Easter show the disciples gathered together in prayer after the Ascension. In the Gospel, Jesus prays for those the Father has given Him, asking that they remain protected and united in faith.

Reflection

The Ascension can seem like a departure, but it is truly a promise of nearness. Jesus does not leave His followers without direction or hope. He prepares them for the coming of the Holy Spirit and reminds them that His mission will continue through them.

The disciples respond not with fear, but with prayerful trust. They wait together, united in faith and expectation. Their example speaks gently into our own lives. There are moments when we may feel uncertain, stretched, or waiting for clarity. Yet God is still present in those moments. Christ continues to guide His people even when the path ahead is not fully visible.

Today’s readings encourage us to lift our eyes toward heaven while remaining faithful in daily life. The Ascension reminds us that our hope is not limited to this world alone. Christ has gone before us, opening the way to eternal life, and He remains close to us through His Spirit, His Word, and His Church.
