Faith grows best when the heart stays open. Sometimes God strengthens us through Scripture, sometimes through prayer, and sometimes through the wisdom of faithful people He places in our lives. Today’s readings offer a gentle reminder that spiritual growth is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that grace is still at work.
The Word
In the first reading, Apollos arrives in Ephesus as an eloquent speaker who knows the Scriptures and teaches accurately about Jesus. Yet his understanding is still incomplete. Priscilla and Aquila do not shame him. They take him aside and explain the Way of God more accurately. Apollos receives this help and later gives great assistance to those who believe through grace.
The psalm proclaims that God is King over all the earth. In the Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples to ask the Father in His name so that their joy may be complete. He also reminds them that the Father Himself loves them because they have loved Him and believed that He came from God.
Reflection
Apollos shows us that a strong faith can still be a growing faith. He is gifted, sincere, and bold, yet he still needs guidance. Priscilla and Aquila show us the beauty of correction offered with love. They do not discourage his zeal. They help shape it more fully for the Lord.
This is a hopeful message for us. We do not have to know everything to serve God faithfully. We simply need humble hearts that are willing to listen, learn, and keep following Christ. God can use our gifts while still forming us more deeply.
The Gospel brings that same hope into prayer. Jesus does not present the Father as distant or reluctant. He tells His disciples that the Father loves them. Prayer, then, is not a cold request sent into silence. It is a relationship of trust, offered through Christ, with confidence in the Father’s love.
Today, we can ask the Lord for two gifts: a teachable spirit and a trusting heart. May we receive guidance without pride, pray without fear, and allow God to complete His joy within us.
