As Advent nears its close, the Church gently shifts our gaze from waiting to readiness. God is coming, and He is already at work, shaping hearts, restoring relationships, and preparing the way for His saving presence among us.
The Word
Malachi speaks of a messenger who prepares the way and of the Lord who comes to purify like fire, refining His people for faithful worship. The psalm reminds us that God patiently guides the humble in truth and kindness. In the Gospel, the birth of John the Baptist reveals God’s mercy unfolding in God’s time, fulfilling ancient promises and stirring holy wonder.
Reflection
God’s coming is both comforting and challenging. Like a refiner’s fire, His presence purifies what is true and burns away what does not belong. This is not meant to harm but to heal, restoring us so our lives may reflect sincere love and faithful service.
John’s birth reminds us that God often works quietly before acting boldly. Elizabeth, Zechariah, and their neighbors did not fully understand what God was doing, yet they rejoiced and took these events to heart. Advent asks us to do the same: to notice God’s movements, even when they surprise us.
As we prepare for Christmas, the question gently arises: what needs refining in our hearts? God draws near not to condemn, but to restore, reconcile, and renew. Redemption is closer than we think.

Lord God,
You are faithful to Your promises and gentle in Your mercy.
As You draw near, refine our hearts and prepare us to welcome You.

Guide us in Your ways and teach us Your paths.
Like John’s life, may our lives point beyond ourselves and give You glory.
Help us to trust Your timing and rejoice in the quiet work You are doing.
We lift our heads in hope, for our redemption is near.
Come, Lord Jesus, and make our hearts ready for You.
