Liturgical Day: Monday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: 1 Kings 17:1-6; Psalm 121:1-8; Matthew 5:1-12
Source: USCCB Daily Readings
Today’s readings remind us that God provides in hidden places, guards us through every step, and blesses humble hearts. Elijah is fed in the wilderness, the psalm lifts our eyes to the Lord, and Jesus shows us the way of true blessedness.
Some days feel like a mountain. Others feel like a lonely wadi. Today’s readings meet us in both places and remind us that God is near, guiding, guarding, and providing.
The Word
In First Kings, Elijah obeys the Lord and is sustained in a hidden place by unexpected means. Psalm 121 proclaims that our help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches the Beatitudes, revealing the blessed life of humility, mercy, purity, peace, and faithfulness.

Reflection
Elijah’s story is a quiet lesson in trust. God does not explain everything to him at once. He gives him a place to go, water to drink, and daily provisions. Elijah’s obedience places him where grace can meet him.
The psalm invites us to lift our eyes. Our help does not come from our strength, our plans, or our control. It comes from the Lord who does not sleep, forget, or abandon His people.
Then Jesus blesses those the world may overlook: the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, the grieving, the peacemakers, and those who suffer for righteousness. The blessed life is not always easy, but it is held securely in God’s hands.
