When our efforts feel empty and our strength is spent, Jesus may be inviting us to trust Him more deeply. Today’s readings call us away from worldly confidence and toward humble obedience, reminding us that fruitfulness begins when we listen to Christ and follow where He leads.
There are moments when we have worked hard, prayed faithfully, and still see little result. In those moments, Jesus does not always explain. Sometimes He simply asks us to trust Him enough to try again.
The Word

In 1 Corinthians 3:18–23, Saint Paul warns against placing too much confidence in human wisdom or human leaders. Everything ultimately belongs to God, and those who belong to Christ are called to see life through His wisdom rather than the standards of the world.
Psalm 24 reminds us that the earth belongs to the Lord and that those who seek Him are called to approach Him with clean hearts and sincere lives.
In Luke 5:1–11, Simon and the other fishermen have worked through the night without success. Yet when Jesus tells Simon to lower the nets again, Simon obeys. The catch is overwhelming. Faced with Christ’s power and holiness, Simon recognizes his weakness, but Jesus answers with reassurance and a new calling: do not be afraid. From that moment, Simon, James, and John leave everything and follow Him.
Reflection
Simon’s obedience is especially meaningful because it comes after disappointment. He has already worked hard. He has already tried. From a human point of view, lowering the nets again may have seemed pointless.
Yet Simon chooses to trust Jesus’ word more than his own experience.
We may face similar moments. A prayer seems unanswered. A relationship remains difficult. A good effort produces little visible fruit. Faith does not mean pretending that disappointment is easy. It means allowing Christ to have the final word.
Jesus also meets Simon’s humility with mercy. Simon becomes painfully aware of his own sinfulness, but Jesus does not turn away from him. Instead, He calls him forward. Our weakness does not prevent Christ from working through us when we are willing to trust and follow.
When Jesus calls us deeper, we do not need to know the outcome before we obey. We only need enough faith to lower the nets again.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me the humility to trust Your wisdom above my own. When I am discouraged, help me listen to Your voice and follow You with courage. Lead me into deeper faith and use my life for Your purposes. Amen.
