On the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the readings lift our eyes toward God’s enduring kingdom. Jesus also brings that hope close to home: he sees Nathanael before Nathanael approaches him. We can bring our ordinary concerns to Christ, trusting that he knows us and invites us to follow him.
It can be hard to see beyond the day’s needs and worries. Today’s feast invites us to pause, praise God, and remember that Christ sees us in the middle of our ordinary lives.
The Word
Daniel sees a vision of God’s heavenly court and one like a son of man receiving an everlasting kingdom. The alternate first reading, from Revelation, describes Michael and his angels battling the dragon and celebrates salvation through the Lamb. Psalm 138 offers thanks to the Lord, who answers and gives strength. In the Gospel, Jesus tells Nathanael that he saw him beneath the fig tree, then promises that he will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.
Reflection
Nathanael’s question is simple: How does Jesus know him? Jesus’ answer shows that Nathanael was seen before he knew anyone was watching. That small encounter leads Nathanael to recognize something far greater about the person standing before him.
We may have our own quiet places beneath the fig tree: moments of uncertainty, private prayer, or work that seems unnoticed. We can bring those moments to Jesus. The Gospel gives us room to trust that being seen by him does not depend on having everything figured out.
The feast also turns our attention toward God’s glory. Daniel’s vision and the psalm place our concerns within a larger story of praise and a kingdom that endures. Revelation’s alternate reading speaks of a hard battle, yet its song points to the Lamb’s victory.
Today, take one small step of trust. Tell Jesus what is on your heart, then return to the task before you, assured that he sees you.

Lord Jesus, thank you for seeing me and calling me closer to you. Strengthen my trust when I cannot see what lies ahead, and help me praise you in the work of this day. Amen.
