God’s wisdom often looks different from the world’s wisdom. Paul points us to the power of the cross, while Jesus calls us to keep our lamps ready. Faithful discipleship means trusting Christ, staying prayerful, and living each day prepared to welcome him.
Faithfulness is often built in quiet, ordinary moments. Today’s readings invite us to trust God’s wisdom, remain spiritually ready, and keep turning toward Christ even when his ways seem different from what the world values.
The Word
USCCB Daily Reading: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/082826.cfm
In 1 Corinthians 1:17–25, Saint Paul contrasts human wisdom with the wisdom of God revealed in Christ crucified. What may appear weak or foolish by worldly standards becomes the place where God’s saving power is made known.
Psalm 33 praises the Lord whose word is trustworthy and whose purposes endure. God’s goodness fills the earth, and his plans are more lasting than human designs.
In Matthew 25:1–13, Jesus tells the parable of the ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom. Five come prepared with oil for their lamps; five do not. Jesus ends with a clear call to remain watchful and ready.
Reflection
We often want faith to feel certain, impressive, and easy to explain. Yet Paul points us to the cross, where God’s wisdom overturns ordinary expectations. Christ shows us that true strength can be revealed through humility, sacrifice, and faithful love.
The Gospel adds another lesson: faith cannot be postponed indefinitely. The wise virgins were ready because they had prepared before the bridegroom arrived. In the same way, our daily choices matter. Prayer, mercy, patience, forgiveness, and service are ways we keep the lamp of faith burning.
We do not need to live anxiously, wondering when God will act. We are invited instead to live faithfully in the present. When we trust Christ and tend our relationship with him each day, readiness becomes less about fear and more about love. The wisdom of the cross teaches us where to place our confidence, and the lamp reminds us to remain attentive to God’s presence.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to trust your wisdom more than the wisdom of the world. Keep the light of faith burning in my heart and help me remain ready to follow you with love, patience, and courage. May my life reflect your goodness today. Amen.
