God’s faithfulness gives us strength to live faithfully in return. As we wait for Christ, Scripture invites us to remain awake, grateful, and attentive to the work God has placed before us—trusting that ordinary acts of faithful service prepare our hearts for him.
Much of Christian life is lived in ordinary moments—praying, working, helping, waiting, and beginning again. The readings invite us to see these moments not as interruptions to faith, but as the very places where we practice faithfulness.

In 1 Corinthians 1:1–9, Paul begins by thanking God for the grace He has given the believers in Corinth. He reminds them that God has enriched them with spiritual gifts and will strengthen them as they await Jesus Christ. Above all, Paul points to a steady foundation: God is faithful.
Psalm 145 answers that faithfulness with praise. God’s goodness is worth remembering and proclaiming from one generation to the next.
In Matthew 24:42–51, Jesus calls his disciples to stay awake and be prepared. He describes the blessed servant as the one who is found faithfully carrying out his responsibilities when the master returns.
Reflection
Being ready for Christ does not mean living in fear or trying to predict when he will come. Jesus directs our attention toward faithfulness. The faithful servant simply keeps doing what has been entrusted to him.
That gives great meaning to the small responsibilities of today. A patient word, a quiet prayer, an act of generosity, a task completed with care, or help offered to someone in need can all become expressions of watchful faith.
We do not remain faithful by our own strength alone. Paul reminds us that God is faithful and that he gives his people the grace they need. We can live attentively because the One we are waiting for is already sustaining us.
On this Memorial of Saint Monica, we can also remember the quiet perseverance of faithful prayer. Our waiting is never wasted when it is placed in God’s hands.
Prayer
Faithful God, keep my heart awake to your presence today.
Give me grace to serve well, pray patiently, and use what you have given me for good.
Help me to live each day ready to welcome Christ with joy. Amen.
