Called From the Tomb Into the Living Hope of Christ

Open stone tomb at dawn with warm light shining into a peaceful garden

There are seasons when life feels heavy, delayed, or wrapped in grief. The readings for the Fifth Sunday of Lent speak to those very places. God does not turn away from what seems buried. He comes near, speaks hope, and breathes life again.

The Word
In Ezekiel, the Lord promises to open graves and place His Spirit within His people so they may live. The psalm answers with trust, waiting, and confidence in God’s mercy and redemption. In Romans, Paul reminds believers that the Spirit of God dwells within them, bringing life. In the Gospel, Jesus reveals Himself as the resurrection and the life as He calls Lazarus from the tomb.

Reflection
These readings are full of hope for anyone carrying discouragement, loss, or unanswered prayers. Jesus does not rush past human sorrow. He stands in it. He sees the tears of Martha and Mary, and He weeps. That means your pain is not ignored by God. His love is not distant, even when His timing feels hard to understand.

But the story does not end at the tomb. Jesus speaks with authority over what seemed final. What was wrapped in death had to come out into the light. This is the good news for us too. The Lord still calls people out of fear, despair, shame, and spiritual weariness. His voice reaches deeper than any stone that has been rolled across the heart.

As Lent draws us nearer to the cross and resurrection, this word invites us to believe again. The Spirit of God is still at work. The place that feels closed is not beyond His power. The prayer of faith is sometimes simple: “Lord, I still believe You can bring life here.”

Call to Action
Bring one buried burden to Jesus today and ask Him to speak His life into it.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the resurrection and the life. Meet me in every place of grief, waiting, and weakness. Breathe Your Spirit into my heart and call me into renewed faith, hope, and freedom. Amen.
