Anointed for Purpose, Called to Follow Christ

God often moves in quiet, surprising moments—during ordinary tasks, simple conversations, or unexpected invitations. Today’s readings remind us that the Lord sees more in us than we see in ourselves and calls us into a life shaped by His purpose.

The Word

Saul is chosen by God through Samuel’s anointing, set apart to shepherd Israel and protect the people. In the Gospel, Jesus calls Levi, a tax collector, into discipleship and openly shares a meal with those considered unworthy. Christ reveals that His mission is mercy—He comes to heal and to restore.

Reflection

Saul’s calling begins while he is simply searching for lost animals. Yet God had already prepared his path. Grace works this way in our lives too. What feels ordinary or inconvenient may be the very moment God is shaping our future. He prepares us quietly before He sends us boldly.

Levi’s story reminds us that no history disqualifies us from the love of Jesus. Christ sees the heart behind the labels. He draws near to the rejected and reminds us that He came not for the perfect but for those who know their need.

We honor Saint Anthony, Abbot, whose life of radical surrender invites us to trust God wholeheartedly. Like Levi and Saul, he responded when God called, choosing the simplicity of holiness over the comfort of the familiar.

Call to Action

Ask Jesus to show you one area today where He is quietly calling you to follow Him with renewed trust.

Prayer

Lord God,
You call Your servants in quiet and unexpected ways.
Teach us to listen with humble hearts and to trust Your leading,
even when the path is unfamiliar.

Like Saint Anthony, help us seek You above all else.
Like Levi, give us the courage to rise and follow when You speak.
Heal what is broken in us, strengthen what is weak,
and shape our lives for Your glory.

We place ourselves in Your hands today.
Lead us in faith, simplicity, and love.

Amen.
