Faithful to the End, Filled With the Spirit of God

Light breaking through clouds over a rocky hillside, symbolizing trust in God during trial.

The day after Christmas, the Church turns our eyes from the manger to martyrdom. Saint Stephen’s witness reminds us that following Christ is not always easy, but it is always anchored in hope and trust in God’s care.

The Word
Stephen, filled with grace and the Holy Spirit, speaks with wisdom no one can overcome. Even as he faces violence, his gaze remains fixed on heaven. Jesus prepares His disciples for the same path, promising that the Father’s Spirit will speak through them and sustain those who endure.

Reflection
Stephen’s strength did not come from argument or force, but from deep communion with God. In the face of hatred, he entrusted his spirit to the Lord. His courage flowed from knowing who held his life, even beyond death.

Many of us will never face martyrdom, yet we are asked daily to witness with patience, integrity, and faith. When our beliefs are questioned, when kindness is misunderstood, or when faith feels costly, the Spirit is still at work within us.

Psalm 31 becomes Stephen’s prayer and ours: “Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.” Trusting God does not remove suffering, but it places our lives securely in His faithful hands.

Call to Action
Today, entrust one fear or struggle to God by praying quietly, “Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit,” and choose to respond with faith instead of fear.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
like Saint Stephen, we place our lives into Your hands.
Fill us with Your Holy Spirit when faith is tested and courage feels small.
Give us grace to trust You, to speak with love, and to remain faithful to the end.
Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend our spirit.
Amen.
