In the quiet days of Advent, God often speaks in unexpected ways. Today’s readings call us to attentiveness—learning to recognize God’s work, even when it challenges our assumptions or invites deeper trust.
The Word
Balaam’s oracle in Numbers points toward a future hope: a star rising from Jacob, a sign of God’s promised leadership and blessing. The psalm echoes the cry of every seeking heart—“Teach me your ways, O Lord.” In the Gospel, Jesus confronts questions of authority, revealing that true understanding comes not from clever answers, but from honest faith.
Reflection
Balaam sees something far beyond his own time. He glimpses God’s plan unfolding slowly, faithfully, and with purpose. Advent reminds us that God’s promises may not be immediate, but they are always sure. The rising star points us toward Christ, who comes with quiet authority rooted in love and truth.
In contrast, the leaders in the Gospel struggle not because the answer is unclear, but because they are afraid of what belief might require. Their hesitation reveals how fear can cloud spiritual vision. When we are more concerned with protecting ourselves than seeking truth, we risk missing what God is doing right in front of us.
Advent invites a different posture—humility. Like the psalmist, we are called to ask God to teach us His ways and guide us in truth. When we open our hearts honestly, God gently leads us toward the light already rising among us.
