Held Firm by God’s Strength and Gathered by Christ’s Love

When challenges press in, Scripture points us to God as our strength and to Jesus, who longs to draw us close. Today’s readings invite us to stand in faith, pray with perseverance, and receive the shelter of Christ’s care.

Daily Reflection by John Scigliano for October 29, 2026

Some days call for courage; others remind us how much we need shelter and care. Today’s readings hold both truths together: God strengthens us to stand firm, and Jesus longs to gather us close.

The Word

Readings for Thursday, October 29, 2026 — USCCB

In Ephesians, Paul urges believers to draw strength from the Lord, remain grounded in truth and faith, and pray with perseverance. Psalm 144 praises God as a rock and refuge. In the Gospel, Jesus continues his healing mission and grieves over Jerusalem, longing to gather its people like a hen gathers her brood beneath her wings.

Reflection

Faith does not mean that we never face pressure or uncertainty. Paul’s words in Ephesians point us toward the strength God offers: truth, righteousness, faith, hope, and prayer. These help us remain steady and meet others with peace.

The psalm gives us a simple image to carry through the day: God is our rock and refuge. When we feel unsettled, we can turn to God in prayer and remember we don’t have to meet every challenge in our own strength.

Jesus’ image of a hen gathering her chicks shows his tender care. His lament for Jerusalem reveals a heart that longs to protect and bring people close, even when they turn away. We can bring our worries, weariness, and need for help to him.

Today, we can stand firm in faith while resting in Christ’s care. Courage and tenderness belong together: God strengthens us, and Christ welcomes us beneath his sheltering love.

Prayer

God of strength and refuge, steady us in faith and teach us to trust in Jesus’ care. Help us pray with perseverance and offer your peace to those around us. Amen.
