Rooted in Love and Set Free to Walk as Children of Light

Paul calls Christians to live with kindness, forgiveness, and gratitude. In the Gospel, Jesus sees a woman weighed down for years and restores her. Together, these readings invite us to stay rooted in God and make room for compassion that helps others rise.

Daily Reflection by John Scigliano for October 26, 2026

A life of faith takes root in God’s love and becomes visible in how we treat others. Today’s readings show us both the steady growth of a faithful life and the freedom Jesus offers through compassion.

The Word

Read the USCCB readings for October 26, 2026.

In Ephesians 4:32–5:8, Paul urges believers to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving, and to live as children of light. Psalm 1 pictures the faithful as a tree planted beside running water. In Luke 13:10–17, Jesus heals a woman who had been unable to stand upright for eighteen years. When others object, Jesus affirms that she deserved to be freed from her burden.

Reflection

The woman in the Gospel had carried her burden for many years. Jesus noticed her, called her forward, and restored her. His attention shows us that compassion is not an interruption to a faithful life; it is part of its heart.

The readings also ask us to consider what helps us grow. Like the tree in Psalm 1, we need to remain close to the source of life. Prayer, Scripture, gratitude, and the support of our faith community can help us grow in kindness and forgiveness.

Paul’s call to live as children of light gives that growth a practical shape. We can choose words that encourage, let go of a grudge, or notice someone who feels overlooked. Small acts of love can help another person carry less.

Jesus’ healing invites us to bring our own burdens to him and to treat the burdens of others with care. Today, ask: Who might need me to notice, listen, or offer a little help?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me stay rooted in your love and grow in compassion. Give me grace to release the burdens I carry and to treat others with kindness. Lead me to live as a child of your light. Amen.
