October 13, 2026 — Tuesday of the Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
Christ frees us from the burden of trying to earn God’s love through outward appearances. When grace renews the heart, faith becomes visible through mercy, generosity, and loving service. Jesus invites us to receive that freedom and share it with others.
We often spend time making sure everything looks right on the outside. Jesus asks us to look deeper. He desires hearts shaped by grace, where faith is expressed through sincere love and concern for others.
The Word
Read the October 13, 2026 Mass Readings at the USCCB
In Galatians 5:1–6, Paul proclaims that Christ has set us free. Our relationship with God does not depend on outward religious practices or personal accomplishments. What matters is faith that becomes active through love.
Psalm 119 connects God’s mercy and commandments with true freedom. The psalmist finds hope, delight, and liberty by walking according to God’s ways.
In Luke 11:37–41, a Pharisee is surprised that Jesus does not perform the expected ceremonial washing before the meal. Jesus uses the moment to teach that outward cleanliness cannot replace inner conversion. He points to generosity as a sign of a clean heart.
Reflection
The freedom Christ gives is not permission to ignore God’s ways. It is freedom from believing that we must earn God’s love through perfect performance. Grace allows us to stop pretending, bring our weaknesses to Jesus, and trust him to renew us from within.
Jesus challenges the temptation to concentrate on appearances while neglecting the heart. We may say the correct words, maintain good habits, and appear faithful while quietly carrying resentment, selfishness, or pride. Christ sees these hidden places, yet he invites us to healing rather than rejecting us.
Paul gives us a simple measure of spiritual growth: faith working through love. Genuine faith gradually changes how we respond to people. It makes us more patient, forgiving, generous, and willing to serve without expecting recognition.
Generosity is one way our inward renewal becomes visible. Giving does not always involve money. We can offer our time, attention, encouragement, patience, or practical help. When love guides what we give, others glimpse the freedom and mercy Christ has placed within us.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, free me from the need to appear perfect before others. Cleanse and renew my heart so my faith may show through love, mercy, and generosity. Help me serve someone today with humility and joy. Amen.
Call to Action
Offer one quiet act of generosity today. Give someone your undivided attention, practical assistance, encouragement, or another form of support without seeking recognition.
