Choose Sincerity, Truth, and the Courage to Do What Is Good

Warm morning light falls through an open doorway as a hand reaches toward the light.

God calls us to leave behind what weakens our faith and to choose sincerity, truth, and mercy. In today’s readings, we are invited to examine our hearts, seek God’s justice, and follow Jesus with the courage to do good whenever the opportunity is before us.

Daily Reflection by John Scigliano for September 7, 2026

Faith is not only about knowing what is right. It is also about having the courage to live it. God continually invites us to let go of what harms our spiritual life and to choose what brings healing, honesty, and love.

The Word

Read Today’s USCCB Readings

In 1 Corinthians 5:1–8, Saint Paul urges the community to take sin seriously and uses the image of yeast spreading through dough. His message points toward a renewed life marked by sincerity and truth because Christ, our Paschal Lamb, has been sacrificed.

Psalm 5 turns the heart toward God’s justice and protection, reminding us that those who take refuge in the Lord can rejoice in him.

In Luke 6:6–11, Jesus encounters a man with a withered hand in the synagogue. Although others are watching for a reason to accuse him, Jesus chooses compassion. He makes clear that doing good and restoring life are at the heart of God’s will, and the man’s hand is healed.

Reflection

These readings invite us to look honestly at what we allow to grow in our hearts. A small resentment, dishonest habit, or unkind attitude can quietly influence more of our lives than we realize. God does not expose these things to leave us discouraged. He calls us toward renewal, sincerity, and truth.

Jesus also shows us what faithful action looks like. Faced with criticism and hostility, he does not allow fear of other people’s reactions to keep him from doing good. He sees a person in need and responds with mercy.

We may face smaller versions of that choice today. Will we speak kindly when irritation would be easier? Will we help when it would be more convenient to walk away? Will we choose honesty when compromise seems simpler? Following Christ means allowing his goodness to shape our decisions, even in ordinary moments.

Ask God to clear away what weakens love, and then choose the good that is in front of you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, cleanse my heart of anything that keeps me from living in sincerity and truth.
Give me courage to choose what is good and compassion to respond when someone needs my help.
Lead me in your ways and make my life a reflection of your mercy.
Amen.

Call to Action

Today, notice one opportunity to do good for someone without seeking recognition. Offer encouragement, practical help, patience, or compassion, and let that quiet act become your response to Christ’s call.
