Mary Magdalene approached the tomb overwhelmed by sorrow, but one word changed everything: Jesus called her by name. Her encounter with the risen Christ transformed her grief into joy and sent her forth to proclaim the good news.
There are seasons when we search for God but cannot recognize His presence. Grief, disappointment, fear, and uncertainty can cloud our vision. We may pray, seek answers, and remain faithful, yet still feel as though the Lord is far away.
Saint Mary Magdalene knew this experience. She went to the tomb while it was still dark, carrying the weight of sorrow. She expected to find the body of Jesus. Instead, she encountered the risen Lord and received a new mission.
Her story reminds us that Jesus meets us in our darkest moments, calls us personally, and transforms us into witnesses of His resurrection.
The Word
The first reading from the Song of Songs describes someone searching through the night for the one her heart loves. She searches through streets and crossings, refusing to surrender to discouragement. Her persistence is finally rewarded: “I found him whom my heart loves.”
This longing is echoed in the responsorial psalm:
“My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.”
Mary Magdalene embodies this spiritual thirst. She seeks Jesus even when she believes He has been taken away. She remains near the tomb after the other disciples leave. Her love will not allow her to walk away.
Then everything changes when Jesus speaks one word:
“Mary!”
At first, Mary sees Jesus but mistakes Him for the gardener. She does not recognize Him through appearance alone. Recognition comes when He calls her by name. In that personal moment, sorrow gives way to faith. She turns toward Him and responds, “Rabbouni,” meaning Teacher.
Jesus then gives Mary a mission: “Go to my brothers and tell them.” She leaves the tomb carrying the greatest message ever proclaimed:
“I have seen the Lord.”
Reflection
Jesus Meets Us in Our Sorrow
Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. Jesus did not condemn her tears or dismiss her grief. He met her within it and asked, “Why are you weeping?”
The Lord is not indifferent to our suffering. He knows the loss, confusion, and disappointment we carry. Our tears do not indicate an absence of faith. Sometimes they reveal how deeply we have loved and how strongly we still hope.
Jesus may not immediately remove every difficult circumstance, but He does not abandon us within it. He comes near, speaks to our hearts, and helps us see beyond the apparent finality of the tomb.
Jesus Calls Us Personally
Mary recognized Jesus when He called her by name. This detail reveals the deeply personal nature of our relationship with Christ.
We are not anonymous members of a crowd to Him. He knows our histories, struggles, gifts, fears, and hopes. He calls each of us personally and invites us to respond with trust.
When prayer feels dry, or God seems distant, we can remember that His knowledge of us has not changed. The Good Shepherd still knows His sheep, and He continues to call each one by name.
Take a quiet moment today and imagine Jesus speaking your name. What sorrow, fear, or uncertainty would you bring before Him? What might He be inviting you to see differently?
Love Keeps Searching
The Song of Songs and the psalm both express a determined longing for God. Mary Magdalene displays that same perseverance at the tomb. She continues seeking even when she does not understand what has happened.
Faith does not mean that we always have immediate answers. Faith means continuing to seek the Lord when the way forward is unclear.
We seek Him through Scripture, prayer, the sacraments, Christian community, and acts of love. Even when our emotions do not provide reassurance, we remain faithful because Christ has promised to remain with us.
The Risen Christ Makes Us New
The alternate first reading declares:
“Whoever is in Christ is a new creation.”
Mary’s encounter with the risen Christ changed the direction of her life. She approached the tomb as a grieving disciple and departed as a joyful witness. Her circumstances were transformed because Jesus was alive.
The resurrection means that failure, sin, suffering, and death do not have the final word. In Christ, renewal is possible. The old things can pass away, and new things can come.
We may carry memories of past mistakes or believe that our circumstances define us. The risen Christ offers another identity. Through Him, we are forgiven, restored, and called into new life.
Every Encounter Leads to Mission
Mary wanted to remain with Jesus, but He sent her to the disciples. Her encounter became a commission. She was not meant to keep the good news to herself.
The same is true for us. When we experience God’s mercy, comfort, or guidance, we are called to share that hope with others. Our testimony does not need to be complicated. Mary’s announcement was direct and personal: “I have seen the Lord.”
We bear witness through our words, but also through patience, forgiveness, compassion, integrity, and service. A life transformed by Christ can help others recognize that He is alive and still at work.
Living the Word
Today, follow the example of Saint Mary Magdalene:
- Seek Jesus faithfully. Set aside a few quiet minutes to pray, even if God feels distant.
- Bring Him your sorrow. Speak honestly about what is causing you pain, confusion, or disappointment.
- Listen for His personal call. Read the Gospel slowly and imagine Jesus speaking your name.
- Receive the promise of new life. Ask Christ to renew an area of your life that feels trapped in the past.
- Share the good news. Encourage someone with a simple word about the hope, mercy, or strength you have received from God.
Call to Action
Spend five minutes in silence today and imagine Jesus calling you by name. Then complete this sentence in a journal or prayer:
“Because I have encountered the risen Christ, I will…”

Risen Lord Jesus,
when sorrow clouds my vision
and I struggle to recognize Your presence,
remain close to me.
Call me by name
and awaken my heart to Your love.
Give me the perseverance of Saint Mary Magdalene
to seek You even in times of darkness.
Transform my grief into hope,
my fear into courage,
and my uncertainty into faithful trust.
Make me a new creation
and send me forth as a witness to Your resurrection.

that You are alive,
Your mercy is present,
and Your love is stronger than death.
