It is easy to fall into routines of faith while keeping our hearts at a distance. Today’s readings gently call us back to something deeper: honest repentance, humble prayer, and a life shaped by mercy.
The Word
Through Hosea, the Lord invites His people to return to Him, promising healing and renewal. Yet He also makes clear that passing devotion is not enough. God desires steadfast love and a real knowledge of Him, not outward sacrifice alone.
In the Gospel, Jesus contrasts the proud Pharisee with the humble tax collector. One trusts in his own goodness. The other throws himself on God’s mercy. It is the humble sinner, not the self-assured religious man, who goes home justified.
Reflection
These readings speak directly to the heart of Lent. The Lord is not impressed by appearances. He is moved by a contrite heart, by honesty, by the person who comes before Him without excuses and asks for mercy.
The Pharisee’s mistake was not that he prayed, fasted, or gave. His mistake was pride. He made himself the center. The tax collector, by contrast, knew his need. He did not compare himself to others. He simply opened his heart to God. That is where grace enters.
Today is a good day to return to the Lord in a simple and sincere way. Not with performance. Not with self-justification. But with humility. God never turns away the heart that comes to Him honestly.
Call to Action
Pray today with the tax collector’s words: “O God, be merciful to me a sinner,” and let that prayer shape the way you see both yourself and others.
Prayer
Merciful Lord,
I come before You with a humble heart, asking for Your mercy and grace. Cleanse me of pride, soften what has grown hard within me, and teach me to return to You with sincerity.
Help me not to trust in appearances or compare myself with others, but to rest in Your compassion alone. Form in me a contrite spirit, a heart that seeks to know You, love You, and walk in Your ways each day.
May my life be pleasing to You, not only in words or outward actions, but in truth, humility, and mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
