Courage to Praise God and Stand for Truth Today

Dawn light in a quiet chapel with an open psalm book and a single candle beginning to glow.

Some days call for a song. Other days call for a backbone. God meets us in both—and forms in us a faith that can praise Him openly and live His truth quietly, even when it costs.

The Word
Sirach recalls David’s grateful heart: he gives glory to God, orders worship, and lives as one forgiven and strengthened by the Lord. The psalm echoes that confidence: God is a shield and salvation. In the Gospel, John the Baptist speaks the truth without fear, and Herod’s weak conscience crumbles under pressure and pride.

Reflection
David’s strength was real, but his deeper strength was worship—thanksgiving offered “with his whole being.” Praise is not decoration for life; it is training for the heart. When we remember who God is, we become steadier inside. We stop living for approval and start living from trust.

John’s witness shows another kind of strength: a clear conscience. He would not rename wrong as right. Herod, on the other hand, knew what was holy, yet chose what was convenient. The tragedy is not only John’s death—it is Herod’s surrender to fear, image, and impulsive promises.

On the Memorial of Saint Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs, we remember that the Lord still gives courageous hearts. Their witness—and John’s—invites us to persevere with “a generous heart,” holding the word of God with patience. Today, courage may look like one honest sentence, one faithful decision, one refusal to gossip, one gentle boundary, one quiet “I can’t go along with that.” Praise fuels that courage, because worship reminds us we belong to God.

Call to Action
Choose one moment today to do both: offer a short prayer of praise (“Blessed be God my salvation”), and then take one small, truthful step you’ve been avoiding.

Prayer

Lord God, our salvation,
You are our Rock and our shield.
Teach us to praise You with a whole heart like David,
and to stand for what is true with steady courage like John the Baptist
and Saint Paul Miki and his companions.

When we feel pressure to compromise, strengthen us.
When we feel afraid, remind us we belong to You.
Give us a generous heart that holds Your word,
and the perseverance to bear good fruit today.

We trust You, Lord. Blessed be God, our salvation.
Amen.
