He Must Increase as We Learn to Let Go

Soft morning light reflecting on a calm river symbolizing spiritual renewal.

In daily life, we often measure success by attention, control, or results. Today’s readings gently turn our focus elsewhere—toward trust, prayer, and the quiet freedom that comes from placing ourselves fully in God’s hands.

The Word

Saint John reminds us that God hears our prayers when they are shaped by His will and that we belong to Him, protected and guided by truth. In the Gospel, John the Baptist shows humble clarity, rejoicing not in his own role, but in Christ’s rising prominence.

Reflection

Confidence in God does not mean control over outcomes. It means trusting that God listens, knows, and responds in ways that give life. Prayer, then, becomes less about getting our way and more about aligning our hearts with His loving purpose.

John the Baptist models a rare and beautiful humility. He does not compete with Jesus or cling to recognition. Instead, he finds joy in stepping aside. His words—“He must increase; I must decrease”—are not about diminishing our worth, but about freeing ourselves from self-focus so Christ can shine more clearly through us.

In a world that urges us to promote ourselves, today’s message is countercultural and deeply liberating. When Christ increases in us, joy becomes complete, and our lives quietly point others toward the true light.

Call to Action

Today, choose one moment to release control—offer it to God in trust and let Christ take the lead.

Prayer:
Loving Father,
thank You for hearing our prayers and holding us in Your truth.
Teach us to trust Your will, to walk in humility,
and to rejoice when Christ grows greater in our lives.
Guard our hearts from all that distracts us from You,
and lead us always into the joy of Your light.
Amen.
