The Cost of Love and Discipleship

Jesus cross

In today’s readings, St. Paul and Jesus present two sides of the same divine coin: love and sacrifice. St. Paul reminds us that all commandments—every law and rule—find their true fulfillment in love. “Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another,” he writes. Love, when lived authentically, does no harm, seeks no gain, and brings light into darkness. It is the heartbeat of Christian living, the foundation of peace, and the essence of holiness.

Yet, Jesus takes this love further. In the Gospel, He challenges us to consider the cost of discipleship. “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” His words may sound harsh—“hate father and mother, wife and children”—but Jesus is not calling us to reject them. He’s calling us to rightly order our loves: to place God first, above every attachment and possession. True love, after all, is not comfortable—it demands courage, detachment, and sacrifice.

Like a builder counting the cost before starting a tower, or a king measuring his strength before battle, we too must consider what it means to follow Christ fully. It’s not about half-built faith or partial devotion. The cross we carry isn’t just about suffering—it’s about choosing love, even when it costs us everything.

When we put love at the center, everything else aligns. Our generosity flows naturally, our hearts expand toward others, and our lives become radiant with grace. As the psalm says, “Blessed the man who is gracious and lends to those in need.”

Faith in Action:
Reflect on the “cost” of love in your life today. Where is God calling you to love more deeply, forgive more freely, or give more generously? True discipleship isn’t about what we give up—it’s about what we gain when we let love lead.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, teach me to love as You love—without condition and without fear. Help me to carry my cross with faith and to count the cost of following You not as loss, but as gain. May my life reflect Your mercy, and may my heart remain steadfast in Your love. Amen.
