Everything good in our lives is received as a gift from God. Today’s readings invite us to walk humbly, trust the Lord’s nearness, and follow Christ with hearts shaped by mercy rather than pride or rigid judgment.
It is easy to forget how much of life is a gift. Our abilities, opportunities, relationships, and even our faith are not reasons for pride, but invitations to gratitude. Scripture calls us to live with humility and to keep our eyes fixed on Christ.
The Word
Read Today’s Mass Readings at the USCCB
In 1 Corinthians, Paul challenges believers not to become proud or act as though their blessings came from themselves. He points instead toward humble, faithful service, even when that service includes hardship or misunderstanding. Psalm 145 assures us that the Lord is near to those who call upon Him. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus responds to criticism of His hungry disciples and reveals His authority as Lord of the Sabbath.
Reflection
Paul asks a question that reaches directly into everyday life: what do we have that we did not receive? That truth can soften the heart. Our talents, resources, strength, and opportunities are gifts entrusted to us. Gratitude leaves less room for pride and more room for generosity.
The Gospel also reminds us that faith is not meant to become cold or burdensome. Jesus sees the hunger of His disciples and answers those who focus only on the rule they believe has been broken. His response points us back to the heart of God, where truth and mercy belong together.
We can live this message by receiving God’s gifts with humility and using them with love. When we are tempted to compare, boast, criticize, or judge quickly, we can remember that the Lord is near. Christ remains our way, our truth, and our life, and He teaches us to walk in faithful mercy.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for every good gift You have placed in my life. Keep my heart humble, help me trust Your nearness, and teach me to show mercy as I follow Christ. May all I receive become a blessing to others. Amen.
