God’s call doesn’t always lead us down an easy road. Today’s readings invite us to surrender our plans, allow God to renew our minds, and follow Jesus with trust. When faith costs us something, grace gives us strength to keep walking with Christ.
Following God can be deeply joyful, but it is not always comfortable. Sometimes faith asks us to release our expectations and trust a path we would not have chosen for ourselves.

USCCB Daily Readings — August 30, 2026
In Jeremiah 20:7–9, the prophet struggles with the cost of proclaiming God’s word. He has faced ridicule and rejection, yet he discovers that he cannot simply walk away from the calling God has placed within him.
Psalm 63 expresses a deep longing for God. The psalmist seeks the Lord as urgently as dry ground needs water and finds strength by remaining close to Him.
In Romans 12:1–2, Paul urges believers to offer their whole lives to God and to be transformed through the renewal of their minds. Christian faith is not merely something we profess; it reshapes the way we think, choose, and live.
The Gospel in Matthew 16:21–27 brings the challenge into even sharper focus. Peter struggles when Jesus speaks about His coming suffering. Jesus then teaches His disciples that following Him requires self-denial, taking up the cross, and placing eternal life above everything the world promises.
Reflection
We often want God to bless the plans we have already made. Peter seems to want something similar. He loves Jesus, but he cannot imagine suffering as part of God’s plan. His expectations make it difficult for him to see where Christ is leading.
Jesus invites us beyond that kind of limited vision. Following Him means allowing God to reshape our priorities. Paul describes this as the renewal of our minds. We begin to ask not simply, “What do I want?” but, “Lord, what is good, faithful, and pleasing to You?”
This surrender does not mean that every hardship is good or that Christians should seek suffering. It means that when faithfulness becomes difficult, we do not abandon Christ. Like Jeremiah, we may feel weary at times. Like the psalmist, we may feel spiritually thirsty. Yet God continues to draw us closer. The life we place in His hands is never wasted.
Trust Jesus enough to follow Him even when His path is different from the one you expected.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, renew my mind and teach me to trust Your way above my own. Give me courage to follow You faithfully when discipleship is difficult, and help my whole life become an offering of love to You. Keep my heart close to You in every season. Amen.

Today, identify one plan, worry, or expectation you have been holding tightly. Offer it quietly to God in prayer and ask for the grace to follow where He leads.
