Pride and possessions can quietly become places where we seek security apart from God. Today’s readings invite us to loosen our grip, remember who we are, and trust the Lord whose grace can accomplish what human strength cannot.
It is easy to feel secure when life is going well, our plans are working, and we have enough. Scripture gently redirects our hearts today, reminding us that lasting security does not come from wealth, success, or self-reliance, but from God.

In Ezekiel 28:1–10, the prince of Tyre has become proud because of his wisdom, power, and wealth. He begins to see himself as greater than he truly is. The reading exposes the danger of allowing God’s gifts to become reasons for self-exaltation.
The responsorial passage from Deuteronomy 32 reminds God’s people that their strength does not ultimately come from themselves. The Alleluia from 2 Corinthians 8:9 points to Christ, who embraced poverty for our sake.
In Matthew 19:23–30, Jesus warns that riches can make entering the Kingdom difficult when they capture the heart. His disciples wonder who, then, can be saved. Jesus turns their attention away from human ability and toward the power of God: salvation is God’s work, and what is beyond us is not beyond Him.
Reflection
Possessions are not the only things we can cling to. We may place our confidence in our abilities, reputation, plans, comfort, or control. Like the prince of Tyre, we can slowly begin to live as though everything depends on us.
Jesus offers a better freedom. He invites us to hold every gift with open hands. What we have can serve God and bless others, but it cannot replace Him. When our hearts become less attached to what we own or achieve, we become more available to love, serve, give, and follow.
The hopeful center of today’s Gospel is not the difficulty of discipleship but the power of God. We do not save ourselves by trying harder or accumulating more. We place our lives in God’s hands and trust His grace to lead us where we could never go by our own strength.
Spiritual takeaway: Hold God’s gifts gratefully, but let God Himself be your treasure.
Prayer
Lord God, free my heart from pride and from anything I trust more than You.
Give me the grace to hold Your gifts with gratitude and generosity.
Teach me to believe that with You, what seems impossible can become a path of grace.
