When Following Jesus Means Letting Go

Dawn light over a quiet path with an open hand releasing possessions in the foreground.

God calls us beyond outward faithfulness into deeper trust. Ezekiel’s sorrow, Israel’s forgetfulness, and the rich young man’s sadness all point to the same invitation: hold nothing above God, and let him become the true treasure of your heart.

Daily Reflection by John Scigliano for August 17, 2026

Faith can become difficult when God asks us to release something we deeply value. The readings today remind us that discipleship is not only about doing what is right, but also about trusting God more than the things we cling to for security.

The Word

In Ezekiel 24:15-23, the prophet endures a devastating personal loss and becomes a sign to Israel. His experience points toward the coming loss of the sanctuary and the painful consequences of the people’s unfaithfulness.

The responsorial passage from Deuteronomy 32 warns against forgetting the God who gave his people life. Their hearts had turned toward false gods instead of remaining faithful to the Lord.

In Matthew 19:16-22, a young man asks Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life. He has kept the commandments, yet Jesus lovingly calls him further: to let go of his possessions, give to the poor, and follow him. The young man leaves sad because his wealth has a strong hold on his heart.

Reflection

The Gospel shows that faith is more than checking the right boxes. The young man had lived a morally serious life, but Jesus revealed the deeper question: What has your heart?

Possessions are not the only things we can hold too tightly. We may cling to comfort, plans, success, control, recognition, or familiar routines. Even good things can become obstacles when they take the place that belongs to God.

Jesus invites us into freedom. He does not call us to emptiness for its own sake, but to a life centered on him. When we loosen our grip on what cannot last, we become more able to receive the treasure that does last: life with God.

The spiritual takeaway is simple: ask God to show you what you are holding more tightly than you are holding onto him.

Prayer

Lord, keep my heart from forgetting you or placing anything above you.
Give me the grace to release what keeps me from following you freely and faithfully.
Teach me to treasure your presence above all else. Amen.

Call to Action

Choose one possession, comfort, or habit you can loosen your grip on today, and use that freedom to bless someone else through generosity, prayer, or service.
