God calls us beyond impressive words, knowledge, or outward appearances into the lasting way of love. Today’s readings invite us to receive His wisdom with open hearts and let patient, faithful love shape the way we speak, serve, forgive, and respond to others.
It is easy to measure a day by what we accomplish, how others respond to us, or whether things go according to plan. Scripture points us toward a deeper measure: whether our lives are being shaped by love and whether our hearts remain open to God’s wisdom.

In 1 Corinthians 12:31–13:13, Saint Paul teaches that even remarkable gifts and great acts mean little without love. Faith, hope, and love endure, and love is placed at the center of Christian life. The psalm responds with trust in the Lord’s goodness and steadfast kindness.
In Luke 7:31–35, Jesus describes people who refuse to respond rightly to either John the Baptist or the Son of Man. Their expectations keep them from recognizing God’s work before them. Jesus points instead toward the fruit of true wisdom.
The Church also remembers Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, martyrs whose witness calls to mind a faith expressed not only in words, but through steadfast love and faithfulness.
Reflection
Paul’s words invite us to examine what gives our actions their true value. We can say the right things, know a great deal, work hard, and even make sacrifices, yet still miss the heart of the Gospel without love.
Christian love is often lived in quiet, ordinary ways. It appears when we remain patient with someone difficult, choose kindness instead of irritation, refuse to hold tightly to an injury, or give another person our full attention. These choices may seem small, but they make the love of Christ visible.
The Gospel also warns us about hearts that are never satisfied. The crowd found reasons to reject both John and Jesus because neither fit their expectations. We can fall into the same pattern when we decide in advance how God should speak, whom He should use, or what His answer should look like.
Today, we can ask for a heart humble enough to recognize God’s wisdom and generous enough to choose love. We may not understand everything clearly, but we can still walk the more excellent way—trusting God and allowing love to guide our next faithful step.
Prayer
Lord God, fill my heart with the patient and generous love that comes from You. Help me recognize Your wisdom, release my judgments, and treat others with grace in all I do. May my faith become visible through sincere love. Amen.
