Christ Our King Who Reigns Through Mercy and Peace

Sunrise breaking over a peaceful hilltop, symbolizing Christ’s gentle kingship.

On this feast of Christ the King, we are reminded that the Lord’s reign is unlike any earthly rule. His authority is expressed through compassion, sacrifice, and a love that draws us into true freedom.

The Word

David is anointed as a shepherd-king who unifies Israel. The psalm points to Jerusalem as a place of worship and justice. Paul proclaims Christ as the center of all creation, the One who reconciles all things. In the Gospel, Jesus reveals His kingship from the cross, granting mercy to the repentant thief.

Reflection

Christ’s kingship overturns our expectations. He does not rule by force but by offering Himself completely. The cross becomes His throne, and His crown is formed by love that endures suffering for our salvation. In this self-giving, Jesus shows us what true authority looks like: healing, forgiveness, and restoration.

The repentant thief helps us see the heart of this kingdom. He recognizes his need and simply asks to be remembered. Jesus responds with immediate, generous mercy. This is the hope we all cling to—our King is near, compassionate, and able to bring us into His peace.

Let today’s solemnity draw us deeper into gratitude. Christ holds all things together. He invites us to trust His reign in our lives, especially in the places that feel fractured or uncertain.
