Reflection: Living Awake

In today’s readings, St. Paul gives us a vivid image of our spiritual lives: we are no longer slaves to sin but servants of righteousness. Through Christ, we’ve been raised from death to life—freed not merely from guilt, but for purpose.

Paul’s challenge in Romans 6:12–18 strikes deep:

“Do not present the parts of your bodies to sin as weapons for wickedness, but present yourselves to God.”

Every thought, every word, every action can become a tool—either for sin or for holiness. The grace of Christ doesn’t excuse sin; it empowers transformation. Grace is not permission to drift—it’s power to live awake.

The Psalm (124) reminds us that it is only by God’s help that we escape the traps and torrents that seek to overwhelm us.

“Our help is in the name of the Lord.”

Like a bird freed from the snare, we live in gratitude for a freedom we could never achieve alone.

In the Gospel (Luke 12:39–48), Jesus turns our attention to vigilance. The parable of the faithful steward teaches that grace carries responsibility. We don’t know when the Master will return, but we do know what He expects: faithfulness, compassion, and diligence in our daily duties.

“Much will be required of the person entrusted with much.”

Each of us has been given something—time, talents, influence, love, or knowledge. To live awake is to use those gifts wisely, not waste them in distraction or self-indulgence. The faithful servant doesn’t panic about the timing of the Master’s return; he simply lives each day as if the Master were already here.

Living the Word

I call these actions the AAA of living in abundant faith.

  • Awaken: Begin your day with awareness—invite God into your first thought, your first word, your first action.
  • Align: Ask, “Am I using what I’ve been given to serve God’s purpose or my own comfort?”
  • Act: Offer one part of your life—your words, your work, your relationships—to God as a “weapon for righteousness” today.

Prayer

Lord, awaken my heart to Your presence.
Help me to live not as one asleep in sin,
but as one alive in grace and entrusted with Your gifts.
May I be faithful in what You’ve given,
watchful in spirit, and ready to serve with joy.
Amen.
